About Angela Blake-Ackerson:
When asked why she chose a mental health career, Angela Blake-Ackerson does not hesitate. “My grandmother Mary Elizabeth Hall attended and graduated from the Salisbury Normal School in 1929 as a teacher”, Ackerson says. “She then moved to Pennsylvania and became a social worker in the city. Later she moved back to Kent County and opened Angel's Haven, a day program for the mentally and physically disabled”. Later the program developed to include a residential program as well as the day program. “It was my grandmother who inspired me to become a social worker and devote that part of my life to helping others, as she did”, says Ackerson.
Ackerson graduated from Salisbury University with a B.S.W. in May 1992-an eventful month in that she was married shortly before graduation. “The only weekend that was available near the time we wanted was before my graduation. That made for a very hectic month!”. Ackerson has been a licensed social worker working with families and children since 1992. After coordinating youth programs for the Salvation Army and directing the Family Center at East Salisbury Elementary, Ackerson worked for the Wicomico County Health Department and Eastern Shore Psychological Services. In the meantime, she earned her M.S.W. from the University of Maryland-Baltimore in 2003 and subsequently earned her LCSW-C designation.
Mrs. Ackerson is very proud of her career thus far. In 1999, the Wicomico County Commission for Women honored and recognized her efforts in volunteer work and for the Family Center’s success in serving a high-risk population. In both 2001 and 2005, she received lifetime memberships to P.T.A. for participating in and advocating for youth, school programs, services and equipment.
Over the years, Ackerson noticed that while there are many options for academic tutoring for students, there were no real programs for students who had organizational difficulties. That provided the impetus for the creation of Life Solutions of Delmarva, LLC., which has very quickly grown to include a full range of mental health services.
In addition to helping others, another of Ackerson’s passions is coordinating her late brother’s memorial scholarship fund, the Mark Matthew Blake Memorial Scholarship Fund. “My brother Mark struggled with alcoholism from the time he was about thirteen, and ultimately was killed in 1988 driving drunk. I missed riding to work with him that night by about twenty minutes. When Mark did not show up for work I went looking for him only to drive up on the accident. That is one night I will never forget. I can say from first hand experience the impact this tragedy had on the family. Ever since then I have been very involved in victim impact panels, drunk driving prevention programs, and I feel a real connection to people who have also lost someone in this way”, explains Ackerson. The scholarship awards an annual scholarship to students entering college from Kent County High School.
Whether it is working on organizational skills, parenting workshops, or helping with other issues, Ackerson has years of experience working with families and children. Now the parent of a teenager, Ackerson especially understands and empathizes with those facing parenting challenges, family dynamics, children’s issues, and the difficulties of juggling home, work, and family. She hopes to reach even more people through Life Solutions of Delmarva, LLC.
